The past is tangible in Flanders. Proud belfries bear witness to the time when towns were still independent powers. Churches and cathedrals display impressive art collections that attract tourists from all over the world. Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, Leuven and Mechelen deservedly and proudly carry the name of Flemish art city.
Flemish coast
The Flemish coast offers a surprisingly varied range of activities, from a healthy walk along the beach to collecting shells along the pier, or an invigorating swim in the North Sea, under the watchful gaze of a team of lifeguards. For fast access, the coastal tram serves the entire coast. You can go for a walk around dunes or explore the flat hinterland by bike. As well as sand and water, the coast also offers cafés, fun fairs, shows and museums.
Flemish countryside
Anyone who thinks they know Flanders inside out are in for a big surprise if they take the time to stray a bit further a-field. Pay a visit to the magnificent sites, from the flat polders in the Bruges Ommeland to the sloping orchards in Haspengouw, from the tiny rural villages in Westhoek to the picturesque towns of Oudenaarde, Lier and Zoutleeuw.
