mission Hasselt University is an independent, enterprising university which opts for:
• active university education tailored to the students’ needs,
• top research in spearhead fields,
• entrepreneurship and innovation through its role as an academic think tank and its clear international orientation.

Academic and scientific freedom, social commitment, attention for ethical norms – without any ideological distinction - are basic principles of its education and research. Development of the human potential of its students and personnel is central for Hasselt University.

1. Active education tailored to students’ needs
Hasselt University targets students from all of Flanders and beyond with attractive study programmes which stand out because of their scientifically thorough content and their modern educational concept.

‘From guided self-study to autonomous learning’ is the educational concept of the UHasselt, which means active and independent learning with custom-made counselling. Students process the subject matter by means of self-study tasks and small group assignments. These are discussed in tutorials and supported by practice sessions. Hasselt University requires great dedication of both the student and the teaching staff. The study programmes are flexible and offer students the opportunity to gradually compile their own programmes. The Bachelor’s programmes with flexible learning tracks optimally prepare the students for a wide range of Master’s programmes in their own universities and in other universities in Flanders and the Netherlands.

2. Top research in key fields
The university pursues an active spearhead policy, aimed at developing top level research in a number of clearly-cut domains.

Research and education are closely linked. Members of staff have educational and research tasks; students are introduced to research during the bachelor’s programme and participate in research during their Master’s programme.

The Master’s programmes are supported by the scientific expertise of the research groups and institutes of Hasselt University or its partners.

Apart from that, the university also continues to develop fundamental and applied research within the Association with the Xios Hogeschool and the Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg.

3. A fascinating place to study and work
Working in small groups, good contacts between students and staff and permanent care for the quality of education are typical characteristics of our university. The daytime campus with its facilities such as the library, the study area, the self-study rooms and the computer infrastructure stimulates the student both to study actively and to cooperate with other students.

The proximity of the dynamic student town Hasselt offers numerous possibilities for an intense and varied student life. Our students participate in the university administration at all levels and have their say in the development of education and in quality control.

4. Contributing to the knowledge economy in the (EU-)region as an enterprising university
Hasselt University wants to be the driving force for the knowledge economy in the (EU-)region within the framework of the Association with the Xios Hogeschool Limburg and the Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg. It helps young people to become highly-skilled professionals and entrepreneurs for the knowledge economy. The university’s high-quality research contributes to essential innovations. UHasselt promotes entrepreneurship among the students and staff of the Association.

Hasselt University profiles itself as an independent knowledge centre with well-defined spearhead research in the Technological Top Region Eindhoven-Aachen-Limburg. Within this knowledge region, UHasselt and its partners reinforce education and the transfer of technology:
- with Maastricht University within the unique framework of cooperation of the transnational Limburg University;
- with the Technical University of Eindhoven for engineering programmes;
- with the other Euregion universities, Liège and Aachen, with whom we promote the international exchange of students, also outside the EU.
Furthermore, we cooperate intensively with the other Flemish universities in various fields. The university participates fully in interuniversitary research institutions such as IMEC (Interuniversity Micro Electronics Centre) and IBBT (Flemish Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Broadband Technology).

5. An international gateway for education and research
Hasselt University welcomes students and researchers from many different cultures. Exchange programmes with foreign universities are one component of the education process. Besides that, the university stimulates the international orientation of its students and staff through internationalisation of its research and education. Hasselt University participates in networks in Flanders, the Euregion and the world, which offer students and staff an open window on the world. They also act as a lever for the independence and growth of the university.

6. Mobilisation of talent through equal opportunities
Offering equal educational opportunities to young people from all groups in society is a priority of Hasselt University.

Within the framework of the educational concept and through custom-made tutoring, the university cooperates with the student in order to improve her/his study approach, study methods and study planning and as such, to improve her/his chances of success. We particularly pay attention to young people who speak a foreign language or several languages at home.

7. A university oriented towards society
The broad academic education that Hasselt University offers integrates socially relevant developments into the educational programmes. Students are stimulated to consider their activities in a spirit of openness towards all ideologies and their responsibility in society. The academic community of students and staff is much more than just a study and work environment. Therefore, the university stimulates participation in sports, student life and social activities.

8. Development of human potential
The further development of the university, which is supported by all members of staff, is the challenge for the future. Hasselt University continues to build an organisation where it is fun to work. Full opportunities for development, respect for the individuality of each member of staff, open communication, participation in the administration on all levels and the appreciation of commitment are characteristics of the UHasselt culture. The university is continuously working towards an equilibrium between the personal development of the staff members and the efficient performance of the organisation.
