Learn the Dutch language
Interested in taking up Dutch courses? Whether you want to learn Dutch so you can start a Dutch degree programme, or you just want to learn Dutch on the side while you are studying in Flanders and Brussels: find all information here.
Preparatory year
International students can study Dutch as a preparatory year before studying a Dutch degree at a Flemish higher education institution. Non-EEA students can receive a visa for a maximum of one year when enrolling for a preparatory year. You must already have plans to enrol in a specific Dutch-language degree afterwards in order to receive this visa and be able to start the preparatory programme.
Preparatory years can be followed at Flemish University Centres such as ILT KU Leuven, Linguapolis Antwerp and UCT Ghent. You may study Dutch at any of these centres and you are not bound to study your Dutch degree at these specific universities afterwards - the preparatory year certificate allows you to study a Dutch degree at any Flemish higher education institution.

Learning Dutch while enrolled at a programme
Interested in learning Dutch while you are enrolled at a degree programme? Some institutions offer studying Dutch as an optional subject and you may receive credits for it. For more information on what your institution offers, take a look at the webpages below.
Learning Dutch by yourself is also an option: you can download a language app such as Duolingo on your phone, or you can take up language courses at a CVO (Centre for Adult Education).
If you are a refugee, you may be able to receive additional assistance for learning Dutch. You can find more information at the contact centers of Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering.
